Happy SCHS Book Week 2014

Welcome back to the SCHS Digital Writing Spaces blog. Great to see you!

We're having an exciting Book Week so far here at Suzanne Cory High School.

On Monday we watched Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in the iCentre. With popcorn :)

A few students said they preferred the book to the film and pointed out some of the inconsistencies and omissions - common disappointments for avid fans when their favourite books become films.

On Monday our Book Tournament also began. Library Assistant Ms Cooper has pitted a range of books against each other to be voted in or out every day until Thursday's Grand Final when the winning book is determined. We're at the semi-final stage today - who will win out of Divergent and Harry Potter? Great Expectations and the Trylle trilogy? You decide!

We also have a #bookselfie competition running. Take a photo of yourself with a bookface and email it to the iCentre with your name and homegroup to win a prize of a $20 Dymocks voucher for the most creative.

Yesterday we had guest speaker Phuong-Nghi Le Pham talk to us about the importance of language and literacy in expressing ourselves and establishing our identity. She drew on personal experiences and her impressive array of skills and interests - writer, editor, artist, musician, performer and teacher. On behalf of the school we'd like to thank her for a fantastic talk - if only we'd had more time! Phuong-Nghi holds a BA in Creative Writing and a Grad Dip in English & Media. She has written for and edited many print and online publications including Voiceworks magazine.

Today at lunchtime we had the Fiction Trivia Quiz. Thirteen teams  signed up to test their knowledge of a range of literature, and we had a couple of last minute sign-ups too which was great. It was a very entertaining and challenging quiz.  Thanks to everyone who played!

A huge thank you again to Ms Cooper for setting up and running the quiz and other Book Week activities, and for all your help while replacing Ms Birchall this term.
